( Washington DC
) - Following its exhibition at the ' Takoma Park Arts and Humanities Commission Center ' , the award winning "For Women By Women" photo project from Turkey is now meeting with Washingtonians at ' The Gallery at Warehouse'
.
For Women By Women (FWBW) is an initiative founded by an independent voluntary group of professional and amateur female photographers who came together to help create a change in the status of underprivileged women in Turkey . The photographers' goal is to create awareness about the issues of violence against women, foster positive change in the lives of women at risk, and help provide funding for women's organizations and shelters.
Since its launch in May 2005 FWBW initiative exhibited in numerous cities in Turkey (Istanbul, Diyarbakir, Duzce, Canakkale, Kars, Urfa) and London, UK; shared their photographs at the 'Women and Folk Songs' concert co-organized by the United Nation's Population Fund (part of the Stop Violence Against Women national campaign of the General Directorate of Women Status of the Turkish Republic Prime Ministry); and raised grants for the Independent Women's Support Association in Mersin and Women Solidarity Association in Urfa.
For Women By Women Initiative started with 111 female photographers but now the participant number reached more than 200 and each everyday interested individuals are joining the group. Due to all its efforts thus far IFSAK (Istanbul Photographers and Cinematographers Association) granted "For Women By Women" Initiative the 2005 Annual Photograph Award.
In pursuing their goal to create awareness of the issues, domestic violence and harassment in particular, faced by underprivileged women in Turkey and around the World, the FWBW project uses art - photographs - as a medium. The photographs included in the exhibit reflect all shades and colors of life. They are vibrating, witty, and stimulating.
FWBW photographs are available for purchase. The proceeds from the sales go to the shelters that provide supportive services for victims of domestic and sexual abuse. To see all the donated photos please visit www.

Who are we?
We are a group of female photographers. Currently there are 111 of us, however more are joining our ranks everyday.
We made a plea and in no time we managed to accomplish what seemed near impossible. When we set of to accomplish our mission some were astonished, "are there 50 women photographers from Turkey?" they asked us.
Yes, there are even more of us!
We have established a database of contact information for our group members. For Turkey as far as women photographers are concerned this is a first. We also created a networking group for the photographers to exchange ideas and to create new projects.
For the current project our participants come from all over the globe. In our group there are photographers who live in Singapore, Japan, and the U.S. and thus have mailed in their prints for the upcoming event. Rest of us sent in their materials from all over Turkey.
There are professional and amateur photographers who utilize very different styles, interpretations, and techniques. The diversity and mutual difference that exist within our group is our strength. Our initial call was, "come as you are." So now we have the infamous and the not so famous, the pro and the rookie all under one roof. Our mission is to share and to grow.
What are we gonna do?
On the 14th of May between 14:00-18:30 we will hold an auction during which we will sell our prints to make a stand against violence; violence in general but especially violence against women. The money raised at the auction will immediately go to a pre-assigned independent active women group that provides legal and psychological support to victims of domestic violence.
We want the money to find its place- it's cause and therefore, we strongly believe that the Independent Women Support Center is the appropriate place for this project. [delete the previous section?
Following the auction, at the end of May, we will take the collection of photographs to Diyarbakir for an exhibition.
In the coming days with our colleagues in the press and media we will conduct a press campaign to promote the event as well as cover this vital topic on ‘violence against women' that needs to be addressed at once. We hope to raise awareness on the issue.
Why are we doing it?
we are here today doing what we are doing because we all believe that at some point things must change for the better. We are photographers. We tell our stories in frames. Our photographs are our most valuable assets. Our cameras are an unavoidable part of our lives. We grow as we produce. We learn about ourselves, we discover who we are as we tell our stories through the lens. We express ourselves in our pictures.
And now we are selling our most valued possessions to support those who are not as fortunate.
We are gathered here today to make a stand against violence of all kinds, most importantly violence against women. At least for this once. As a start. We feel that it is time somebody has to say "enough!" Enough to honor killings, enough to sexual harassment, enough to domestic violence, enough to degradation. We wish for a world where women…live and express as they choose to, where young girls do not suffer from repression, and regardless of which side of the fence they are on people are treated as people, with respect.
As the 111 women photographers in this project we decided to create a change in perceptions by selling our photographs. We needed a starting point. And this felt just right.
Our mission is to remind others that nobody's life is unworthy. Our wish is to continue supporting those who strive for their own and others' empowerment, freedom, and peace as well as to put a spotlight on their struggle, to help those that defend those that are still good, pure and beautiful.
